This is for RSJ, I didn't know where else to vent.
Andhra Pradesh government released a government order (GO) in capping film ticket prices in April 2021, right on the eve of Pawan Kalyan's latest film release. And a week ago, Aug 31, they released another GO taking over the online booking for movie tickets, on the lines of train booking. They will pay the producers and distributors their share on a specified date every month.
Can RSJ please comment on this? These policies drive me nuts, the state just over-expanding itself into the market at the whim of its political masters and their idiotic motivations. Movies won't bother releasing when the stakeholders don't know when or if they will be paid. And the government has to build a whole new architecture of payments to do these transfers, after deductions, on time.
I have not read Hayek personally, so far. But there's this quote that really resonates with me
"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design". The Government is too overconfident about its ability in social and economic engineering.
Ehrlichism seems to drive the mindset of a lot of people in India. Lots of radical policy prescriptions are espoused and de facto tolerated because of demographic change. I think Pew did a survey that shows less than 5% of Indians would agree that they are thriving. So, it makes sense that a belief in growth would be so alien to the median voter. There's a book called "The Wizard and the Prophet: Two Remarkable Scientists and Their Dueling Visions to Shape Tomorrow's World" that really captures the binaries here with some nuance.
Following up on my quote below, here is the text of the Amendment Bill to be passed in the AP Assembly this week on movie ticketing to be done by the state government:
This was an exceptionally eloquent newsletter, especially the articles about Game Theory perspective of US-Afghan issue and the NMP summary. The clarity of thought as well as prose makes it so interesting to read. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
