Pranay, Are you satisfied with Modi-Jaishankar stance on our China policy? There is very little communication here from the government. I understand that foreign policy needs to have secrets and not every nuance can be revealed. But taking the public along with a high-level-abstract narrative is also pretty important.

I agree. The revealed preferences are clear: get closer to the West, while not antagonising PRC. (or Russia). While the first part of this strategy is clear, I am confused about the caginess on PRC.

"The elites use the media to present themselves as the authentic messengers and shape public opinion. It is this elite then who influence representation for the public. Once this model got established, we saw the elites dominate representation in democracies for most of the 20th century. This wheel turned in the last decade when the excesses of the financial system, the concentration of the benefits of globalisation, the proliferation of media and greater disparity in opportunities led to a populist backlash against the elites."

This is the correct diagnosis of why right wing authoritarian regimes are coming to power in many countries. Liberals are definitely on back foot. Specially they stand exposed when the globalisation they rationalised resulted in greater disparities between the rich and the poor. They should be interested in and work for genuine & fair world order to establish their credibility.
