Gents - Nice writing as always. Couple of counters below.

1. I am slightly puzzled as to why the incumbent government is seen as fiscally responsible. The consolidated GFD to GDP for FY23 is among the highest in the world. In addition, the FY20 GFD/ GDP (after considering off balance sheet jugglery) was not materially lower than during the worst of the Pranab era. That was despite lower oil prices.

2. Re the impact of colonial rule, your points are mostly fair. On famines, it is worth noting that there were practically none post 1947 (despite frequent crop failures, and even before the Green Revolution). On the other hand, there used to be an average of 1 famine per decade (with lots of deaths) pre 1947. The other point worth noting is that life expectancy in 1947 was barely 30 - atrocious by any standards.

Regarding the issue of Indian citizens giving up their Indian citizenship... I have an opinion. Taking up citizenship in US or any developed country is a long drawn process. For the US it takes atleast 10 years, so are we seeing the effects of the previous decades where ppl migrated and only now they have had to give up their Indian citizenship? Or is there any data to show migration has increased recently?
