It's a norm in govt to start numbering from the second paragraph. Any discussion with medical industry insiders at least makes me feel that medical industry is absolutely corrupt. Stories of expired medicine being repackaged, no quality controls, bribes to doctor being the major cost to the company etc are common.
I think the coverage on CGHS story is incorrect. The article seems to assume that generics are not branded. But, they are branded. The circular’s objective is to force doctors not to prescribe branded generics but to prescribe drug molecules (unbranded generics a la Jan Aushadi). Which is noble except that there is a catch here. Most prescriptions are fulfilled by CGHS themselves out of what they stock - obviously what is left unsaid is that they stock branded generics. If they start stocking unbranded generics only by entering into purchase contracts with Jan Aushadi (which is another Govt. Venture), prescriptions would need to be written accordingly. It is a supply-side issue rather than a demand-side issue.
The monopoly of fooling the masses should rest, of course, only with the state. :)
