This was a really nice edition. Both the piece on national imagination and cognitive mapping were very good and thought provoking - something I intend to apply to my work.

As you have pointed out, India at independence was diversity embodied and the idea of India was in some sense constructed in the backdrop of the British rule. It was natural that positioning against it provided a more unified and cohesive framework and that we are where we are could be viewed as a success of it. As time flew and the idea of India strengthened, the next level questions started surfacing which is what we see today. We had an opportunity (possibly a small one) to develop to a level where the economic prosperity could have disincentivized it.
